The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) established the National Health Research Programme (NHRP) to systematically address the nation's most pressing public health challenges. Approved as a flagship initiative, the NHRP focused on bridging the gap between scientific evidence and real-world public health implementation. Under these priority areas, the programme funded large-scale, decisive, multi-state projects with a strong emphasis on addressing specific national healthcare programme needs. To achieve this vision, ICMR initiated a call for proposals to undertake up to 30 high-impact projects, providing substantial funding of up to ₹25 crores for each project.

By leveraging these comprehensive, multi-centric projects, the NHRP was committed to optimizing equitable, high-quality primary healthcare services and ensuring sustainable, improved health outcomes for populations across India.
